About The Poster
Butterslip Mile was the first poster I finished for the exhibition and probably took the longest. I think it’s also my favourite of the series.
The initial concept was a poster for a heart-warming true story about a busker who changed the world. It would be based in the Butterslip and it could only be Jack O’Leary. He was well up for the idea but unfortunately on the day, arrived without his guitar. So we stood around for a few minutes trying to come up with a new concept when Jack simply asked “will I just take my top off!?”.
The photo of Jack is the first shot I took that day. We tried a couple of other poses and tweaks but I kept going back to the first one. There’s something so funny about his expression that I knew it was perfect.
The next few weeks were spent trying different techniques for removing the green screen, watching tutorials on poster design and playing around with layers, tools and styles until it all took shape.
I hadn’t paid too much attention to my lighting and had issues with green spill on Jack’s hair and I soon realised that I’d need more cast members to fill it out. At the start it was hard to find people for the posters so I used a shot of Gemma D’Alessandro and Sarah Dreeling that I had taken in another shoot, then photographed myself twice as different gang members.
It was only after most of it was finished that I decided on the name… I’ve never even seen 8 Mile!?
