Coming Soon 2011 Launch

My first exhibition ‘Coming Soon: An Exhibition Of Fake Movie Posters‘ launched last night in the Watergate Theatre.

The exhibition is now open to the public from 10-6 Monday to Saturdays until January 13th. Admission is FREE!

Locked and Loaded!

The posters have been printed. The posters have been framed. They’re locked and loaded. I’m good to go!

Okay, so there’s still a metric nut-tonne of things to get sorted before next week’s exhibition launch but things are moving along nicely.

I Need A Hero!

With ideas for new posters flying around all over the place, I’m also looking at genres I haven’t covered yet.

One of them is a super hero movie. There’s plenty of inspiration out there at the moment.

The weeks are flying by.

The frames for the exhibition have arrived.

After a painfully slow day of up-scaling my posters yesterday, I’m ready to go to print this afternoon.

I’m really excited and terrified of finally seeing the prints at full size.

Ideas for new posters are flowing and I’ve already started one.

There’s so much I need to get done before the exhibition…

Coming Soon To A Wall Near You!

The past two weeks have been truly brain-melting. Getting everything ready for the exhibition means I’ve been thrown head first in to the world of print and for some reason it’s not a nice place!

One of the first problems I’ve had is finding the right paper type to print the posters on. I got some print samples done; matte paper was no good, it just soaked up the ink. Glossy looked good, very poster-like but very reflective. Myself and Mary Butler (Arts Officer & Curator) hung the samples in the gallery in the Watergate and the lights bounced all over them making it hard to see the posters. Add the fact that the posters would be framed behind glass and I may as well just hang up mirrors for people to look at themselves. Also according to the framer there is some issue with mounting glossy paper, it won’t work right!? So that’s not an option either.

So I went in search of a silk paper type, one print company nearly wanted to break my legs in advance to print them and then the final cost was ridiculous so I found somebody more reasonable and now I’m waiting on samples to arrive from the UK, so we can print tests, then if they work out, I can order the roll of paper and finally get the posters printed.

Two days ago came a horrible phone call. Mary realised that given the A0 size of the posters plus frames and glass, the weight would be too much for us to hang the posters in the Watergate. We can’t drill in to the walls, everything is usually hung with fishing wire in there. So I was back to finding a framing solution as well.

I’ve discovered a place in Dublin that sells light-weight clip frames, they’re not what I originally had in mind but hopefully they’ll do the job. And with no glass, they won’t be too heavy or shiney.

On the plus side, I’ve just got a large batch of promo posters for the exhibition, I’ll be putting them up around town over the next few days! I’ve still got plenty of time to get everything sorted so I’m not worried, I’d just like to have it done but this is all part of the learning curve I suppose.

‘Coming Soon’: An Exhibition Of Fake Movie Posters

Ross Costigan Photography presents ‘Coming Soon’: An Exhibition Of Fake Movie Posters, in the Watergate Theatre December 8th to January 13th.

The exhibition will showcase a series of Kilkenny-based Hollywood-style fake movie posters, shot against a green screen with a large cast of Kilkenny actors and familiar faces, as part of the Not An Empty Space Programme in association with the Kilkenny Arts Office and the Arts Council of Ireland.

Exhibition 2011: Testing! Testing?

Okay, so I was wrong! This will be my last post before I can announce anything properly about the exhibition.

I got my first batch of test prints back today and I’m delighted to say that everything seems to be good on the colour side and they look pretty awesome! There’s one or two slight changes I want to make before getting the large prints done but I don’t need to worry about the colour profiling.

I’m meeting Mary Butler (Kilkenny Arts Officer) in the morning to show her the test prints and go through the details of the exhibition.

All going well, the next thing I post will be the poster for the exhibition. Coming Soon!

Exhibition 2011: Almost there!

This will probably be the last update before I can actually say something (and show something) about the exhibition.

The dates have been set, I’ve got a meeting next week to confirm them. I think the posters are finished!? Now begins the phase of print tests and I’m nervous about my lack of understanding colour profiling. Other bits and pieces are falling into place and taking shape.

Typically, I’ve also been hit with a wave of new ideas for new posters. Either way, this is just the beginning.
